Josse Pyl explores language as a material element in our daily reality in order to show the machinery that hides behind those signs and sounds that connect one person to another. The works on view set an eye towards the graphic form of a symbol, image, or object and how these function as a cultural artefact that contains (un)pronounced ideas. By using pictorial language as a form of representation, the works attempt to visualize our position in the living world by rewriting its present images, objects, and symbols.
This results in a spacial lexicon that appears to hesitate between image and text. Signs are turned into material characters and objects transform into symbols. Therefore, the works are not a text, but something that reminiscence one. They are neither objects nor images, but something in-between. The works exist somewhere between images and the signs that try to describe these images. Letters and characters get lost among pictures and thoughts and exist somewhere between objects and text, between looking and reading. Sight and visual language are superimposed and lead to a world amidst reality and imagination.
