Opening: Friday 19 September 17:00 – 21:00

From 19 September until 12 October De Kerk presents the exhibition ‘I Will See You On The Other Side’ in collaboration with Marcos Kueh. Kueh is known for his colorful and detailed textile art. In his work, he explores how his motherland is perceived and translates contemporary legends onto textiles. The artist was invited by Unfair to create new work, and was asked to curate a group exhibition around this work.

From this came “I Will See You On The Other Side”, an exhibition that makes you think about forces beyond our material existence and that explores alternative visions of the afterlife: from a fascination with the end of time to spiritual transformation.

31 August & 28 September

On selected Sundays from 11:00 – 12:30
Tickets €15

At De Kerk, we’re reimagining Sundays by hosting special Art Services—an inspiring public programme that transforms the ritual of church services into artist-curated gatherings. Join us for a Sunday morning that’s anything but ordinary!

Both of the Art Services offer a unique space for wonder and encounter from the perspective of an artist, such as Tengbeh Kamara and Ralf Kokke. These artists, invited by Unfair, each curated an Art Service that delves into the themes central to their work. These Sundays are filled with their personal narratives, sharp insights of curated speakers, and engaging performances by makers.

Unfair - 000013040035

Sunday 31 August

11:00 – 12:30 | Tengbeh Kamara
(This programme is held in Dutch only, sorry!)

How do you build community in the arts in an increasingly individualistic world? During the first Art Service in De Kerk, artist Tengbeh Kamara will focus on the subject of community, a term that is frequently used but also risks becoming a buzzword.

On 31 August, Tengbeh will discuss this topic with various creators, artists and curators. From poetry to a panel discussion, during this Sunday morning we will explore the role art and culture play in creating sustainable communities. What can museums and grassroots organisations learn from each other? And how do we preserve a sense of community without losing the individualism of the creator?

Featuring Sierra Durgaram, Jim van Geel, Lemuël de Graav, Jan Hoek and Fleurie Kloostra.

Sunday 28 September

11:00 – 12:30 | Ralf Kokke

How does art relate to God nowadays? During this second Art Service, artist Ralf Kokke will focus on the theme of religion. Kokke reflects on a long journey towards baptism and how this intertwines with his artistic practice. He will share a story about faith, doubt, surrender and the tension between the art world and a spiritual quest.

Is there still room for God in the art world? And what faith do we still have in art? Kokke explores these personal questions from different perspectives together with various artists and speakers.

Featuring Gijs Assmann, Abul Hisham and Tahrim Ramdjan.

Whether you’re a beginner looking to get inspired, or you’re curious to try out a new medium, at Unfair Art Academy you’ll leave with new techniques, fresh inspiration, and a finished piece to take home for your collection.

Spots are limited – so be quick so be sure not to miss out!

23 August

14:00 – 16:00
Michal Kruger
Oil pastels

In this workshop we will explore some unique properties of oil pastels together with artist Michal Kruger. Through playful and experimental mark making and figuration we will learn how oil pastels and crayons offer a much wider range of subtleties than the rough sketching or naive textures it’s often associated with.

6 September

14:00 – 16:00
Timothy Voges
Mixed media

In this workshop, Timothy will teach us all about a solvent printing technique using essential oils to transfer old (historic/archival) photographs of the Tuindorp-Oostzaan area onto postcards. After the transferring, we will be colouring in the black and white images by hand, resulting in unique, colourful and nostalgic postcards.

Sunday 28 September

14:00 – 16:00
Pien Kars
Lino printing

In this linoprinting workshop you will focus on making your own linoprint – a fun technique to create a bold print, a beautiful drawing or maybe even an activistic pamphlet. The great thing about lino is that you can reproduce the exact same print again and again in an easy way. You’ll get to know basic techniques and take home a beautiful print as well as your linoblock so you’ll be able to continue at home.

Sunday 12 October

14:00 – 16:00
Baby Reni
Textile

Under the name Baby Reni, artist Irene Ha deconstructs and opens up the conventions of fashion from an artistic perspective. In this workshop, Baby Reni will guide us in experimenting with old textiles. On the last day of De Kerk, this workshop will revolve around community; the central focus of this Unfair project. Together with Baby Reni, we will create a community quilt, to celebrate cooperation and the communal aspects of art.

Calling all booklovers! For those who find joy in the fusion of visual art and the written word, we have teamed up with San Serriffe to fill our bookshelves with a premium selection of art publications.

San Serriffe is an island discovered on April Fool’s Day in 1977, and it also happens to be a bookstore in Amsterdam. Both share a fascination for how words end up on the page. For De Kerk, San Serriffe has curated a selection of books which look at islands as sites of geographic identity and home of utopian thought.

Come and flick through the publications at De Kerk and find one that fits your liking!

Unfair - Kerk-titleshow01

7 August until 14 September

Thursday to Sunday 11:00 – 17:00
Opening: Thursday 7 August 17:00 – 21:00

From 7 August to 14 September, Unfair presents the exhibition ‘Post-Tropical Imagination’ at De Kerk, in collaboration with Serana Angelista.

Angelista explores the influence of Afro-migrant culture. For this exhibition, she created new work through which she reveals the complex dynamics between imaginary worlds, memory and identity. Within this theme, Angelista invited artists to show the influence of migration and imagination within a group exhibition.

‘Post-Tropical Imagination’ is the exhibition that resulted. Through the use of archival material, found objects and experimental printing techniques, the artists reflect together with Angelista on the imagination of a (second) homeland, a country of (shared) origin and the way imagination shapes feelings of homesickness, longing and belonging.
