No Limits! Art Castle

Who is allowed to participate in the art world and who isn’t? This question is central in the presentation of No Limits! Art Castle during UNFAIR24. No Limits! Art Castle explores why the Dutch cultural sector is still divided into a regular art field and an Outsider Art circuit, or why it’s so difficult to showcase your work without formal art education.

Read more on No Limits! Art Castle.

At UNFAIR24, No Limits! Art Castle shows three collaborations:

Germain Marengo & Denzel Veerkamp

Unfair - Denzel+germain, photo by ttasniem el sheikh

Germain Marengo and Denzel Veerkamp have been working together for more than a year, exploring their Surinamese identity through textiles in relation to the way of life in the Netherlands. During their spiritual process, they actively ask themselves: What are ways to ground oneself in the West?

Abou Ayoubi & Arash Fakhim

Unfair - Arash+abou

The works of Abou Ayoubi and Arash Fakhim emerge from stories they tell each other, in an attempt to get to know each other better. These are then painted on surfaces that reference mountains and rocks from their native country.

Shani Leseman, Tommy Smits & Zinderin Kunst

Unfair - Alien shani leseman & tommy smits_photocredit tommy_smits_000610 kopie

Shani Leseman and Tommy Smits, together with the artists from Zinderin Kunst (Mo Ameziane, Ellen Brinkman, Dyon Faber, Laurens Gabriël, Dustin Hofman, Liliane Jansen, Lonneke Klinkenberg, Bassam Mosa, Cyril Rosebel, and Alex van Waveren), created a show full of ceramics and Aliens that was previously shown in our castle. The show was called ALIENS because we all sometimes feel a bit like Aliens on this planet.

And that’s exactly what No Limits! Art Castle stands for – celebrating that we’re all Aliens!

NGA X UNFAIR24

UNFAIR24  proudly presents a unique collaboration with the NGA (Nederlandse Galerie Associatie). In different booths spread across UNFAIR24 we invited their members, established and upcoming galleries, to look into the future with us and showcase their practice with one artwork. Especially for this year’s edition of Unfair, we “reveal” new artists, celebrate established artists and foremost grant the opportunity to galleries to celebrate the artists that bind us, and work on strengthening the market together.

The NGA (Nederlandse Galerie Associatie) is the trade association for Dutch galleries. Additionally, the NGA serves as the point of contact for the government, cultural institutions, media, and businesses on various topics concerning gallery owners, such as subsidies, rates, legal matters, and art fairs.

Publications

Calling all booklovers! For those who find joy in the fusion of visual art and the written word, our bookshelves are filled with a premium selection of publications by artists featured in our main programme, offering intimate glimpses into their creative processes and inspirations.

Envelopes for love letters, private glamour photoshoots, cosmic visions, a conversational index of housing precarity, border cameras surveilling fauna, the struggles of autofiction — for UNFAIR24 San Serriffe presents a selection of books, on top of the Unfair selection, related to revealing the truth?, curiosity, visibility, disclosure and, inevitably, obfuscation. San Serriffe is an art, design and theory book shop, located in Amsterdam.

CBK Zuidoost

CBK Zuidoost and BijlmAIR showcase 3 artists Samuel Sarmiento, Halimatu Iddrisu and Razia Barsatie. Read more about CBK Zuidoost or about the residency programme BijlmAIR.

Halimatu Iddrisu

Halimatu Iddrisu (1997, based in Kumasi, Ghana) is currently staying at the CBK residency. In her artistic endeavors, she delves into the juxtaposition of her artistic identity with the confines of a strict Islamic upbringing in Accra, Ghana. This stark contrast not only shapes her personal experiences but also serves as a fertile source of inspiration. In 2020, Iddrisu graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Fine Art at the same institution.

Razia Barsatie

Razia Barsatie (1982, based in Amsterdam) has spent the summer of 2024 at the KNUST in Kumasi, to develop new work. In her quest for liberation from both the suppression of emotions and the culturally determined power structures that dominate daily life, she confronts the cultural traditions her ancestors brought from India to Suriname more than 150 years ago. Barsatie explores the scents of herbs from her Surinamese background; either literally or symbolically, combined with video animation and/or drawing on ecological materials. Through her scent art, Barsatie aims to remove the taboos and shame linked to sexuality and gender, thereby contributing to a healthier future mentality.

Samuel Sarmiento

Samuel Sarmiento (1982, based in Aruba) is a self-taught Venezuelan artist and was a BijlmAIR resident in 2022. In his own words: “I take a particular interest in the study of history, as a way to understand and reinterpret problems inherent to human survival, as well as identifying the exchanges and transatlantic connections that have linked humankind on different levels. Similarly, I believe in the investigative capacity of art and the inherent ability of an artistic object to communicate the reality of its time, thus preserving information and knowledge for future generations. I am interested in the expressive and narrative possibilities of ceramics, a medium capable of communicating contemporary discourses through different techniques but maintaining a heritage that can easily be associated with artisanal crafts that evoke a reconnection with the earth in an era of digital media.”

Saturday Afternoon

Saturday afternoon we’ll kick off your weekend plans with a festive programme of talks, performances, and more. We start the day at 3PM with a series of engaging Interview Roulettes.

Explore the art of wine and art pairing with Sebonsa, or have your artistic future revealed through palm reading. All these activities take place in the vibrant atmosphere of de Gashouder. From 6PM, visitors can enjoy a series of exciting performances that will captivate and inspire.

The Unfair Game of Interview Roulette

In our Unfair Game of Interview Roulette, three times two artists have been randomly paired together to answer each other’s questions about the specs and rambles of their artistic life & practice. We’ve asked the six artists to send us questions they would like another artist to answer. Next, we randomly picked secret couples. Each couple answered each other’s questions live, but the fun part is, they don’t know who’s questions they’re answering.

Saturday November 23rd from 15:00 in the talks area.

Ahmad Mallah + Rebecca Lillich // Krüger ‘The Price of Bricks’ (2024)

Thursday November 21st from 17:30 till 18:00

The Price of Bricks is a collaborative project between Ahmad Mallah and Rebecca Lillich // Krüger, exploring the physical and emotional cost of rebuilding after destruction. Using a combination of live performance, a pile of bricks and a two screen video installation, the project examines how bricks serve as both barriers and building blocks—simultaneous symbols of oppression and hope.

This current work is a first task in an ongoing series of exercises exploring the definition of a brick.

Similar to the duo’s first project The Ladder (2023,) the series will evolve through various tasks researching and deciphering the symbolic object in front of them.

In task 1, the duo sit and build a wall through their bodies, both an act of agency and caging as they become part of what holds them. The wall will be both a barrier and a canvas—symbolizing borders, restrictions, and the structures we build to protect ourselves, yet also a site for resilience and transformation.

Hannah Kindler ‘Echo of Indigo Waters’ (2024)

The lecture performance traces the history of indigo and shows how the dye, using water as a transport medium and an essential component of the dyeing process, connects different times and continents through its trade history. The various stages are illustrated through stories of women involved in the cultivation, production, and trade of indigo.

The journey begins in West Africa, where indigo dyeing has been a symbolically significant craft for centuries, predominantly practiced by women. It then moves to India, where the Indigo Revolt in the mid-19th century marked the first successful peasant uprising against British colonial rulers.

Through Genoa and Amsterdam, the dye reaches Europe, where the textile industry flourishes. Finally, the story arrives in Basel, as Swiss merchants learned from Dutch textile businesses the secrets of printing with overseas dyes.

EMIRHAKIN

Ongoing throughout the fair

Unfair - Profile_by_arthurjules
Unfair - Work2_by_tiobordieters
Unfair - Work1_by_giovannisalice

EMIRHAKIN poses urgent yet open questions about the influence of contemporary politics on our human psyche. Navigating through the ever-changing signs and symbols of our times, the artist is mainly curious about the things that are being put in places that they are not supposed to be, serving as reminders that meaning often emerges through this arbitrariness.

His practice encompasses the mediums of performance, text, video, and installation, which are translated into visual (and non-visual) indexes. By challenging the bodily experience of the artist and the audience, his long-durational pieces dismantle the predefined ways of observing and performing, consider the space beyond physicality as a negotiation, and resist the constructed idea of time through the modes of queer temporalities.

Pottery #2

Unfair presents: Lou-Lou van Staaveren

This year Unfair invited artist Lou-Lou van Staaveren to develop her first work in public space. This installation, Pottery #2, is the result of an extensive research and development period, culminating in a public immersive installation.

People and nature are often seen as two contradictory forces, which is not unjustified given the climate crisis in which we find ourselves. In itself, the Westerpark is a contradiction. The park was built on heavily contaminated grounds, as a result of the old Westergasfabriek, and balances its function between that of leisure, relaxation and a nature experience in a metropolitan context. This tension is strongly illustrated between the relatively quiet allotments and the more than 9 million visitors that the park attracts annually, almost on non-overlapping parts of the park.

With Pottery #2, together with Lou-Lou van Staaveren, we zoom in on these contradictions, between people and nature, between the urge to tile the garden and to get lost in a forest. The greenhouse, itself an iconic invention for bending nature to our will, forms the backdrop for an installation that allows visitors to reflect on  nature and our relentless urge to control it.

Pottery is an ever-changing garden installation consisting of a large number of terracotta pots and living plants. The installation is inspired by two kinds of potteries. The French roadside poterie which’s elaborate terracotta collections are like otherworldly landscapes with endless stacks and rows of pots. And the English pottery: an assortment of potted plants grouped together to form a display, usually on the terrace of a garden or on a balcony.

Carefully balanced on top of one another, the heavy pots become elegant sculptures – expanding on the idea of the garden as the ideal balance between the immersion in nature and the cultivation of a landscape. Van Staaveren playfully embodies our desire to shape our immediate surroundings, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between nature and art.

Lou-Lou van Staaveren
Lou-Lou van Staaveren (1990) comes from a family of flower farmers and has always been drawn to plants and greenery. Over the past years, the garden has become the arena of her photography practice, serving as both the playground and laboratory. For Van Staaveren, gardening and photography stand surprisingly close: both the gardener and photographer operate with similar control, observing on one hand and intervening on the other. Like a gardener shaping a landscape, she creates new realities through images, constructing paradises and utopias. The artist’s work sparks a sense of eerie wonder, encouraging the viewer to question their anthropocentric position and the consequences of idealising and controlling our natural environment.

Last year, from a staggering number of submissions to our Open Call, our expert jury selected Studio Verter as the winner of the Unfair Architect Award 2023. To commemorate Unfair’s 10th anniversary, Studio Verter drew inspiration from previous exhibition designs for their sketch proposal ‘Fair Upon Fair Upon Fair,’ honoring past Architect Award winners.

This year, at UNFAIR24, Studio Verter has created an evolved version of their previous design. With a focus on sustainability, we’ve experimented with repurposing materials from past exhibitions into this new, innovative layout. This approach not only celebrates our history but also demonstrates our commitment to environmental responsibility in the art world.

The result is a captivating space that bridges Unfair’s past and present, offering visitors a unique journey through our artistic evolution. Studio Verter’s design showcases how creative vision can harmonize with sustainable practices, setting a new standard for exhibition spaces in the contemporary art scene.

The Artist Fund is a circular monetary fund that supports artists in developing their presentations for Unfair. With the Artist Fund, we are proud to be the pioneering and probably only art fair that compensates participants for their involvement in our program.

The idea is simple. Artists get an incentive to develop work for our fair from our fund. Upon selling their artwork, artists donate a percentage of their sales proceeds to the fund. This pay-it-forward method encourages the creation of a support network between artists of all ages and disciplines, and paves the way for the next generation of creators. Through this initiative, we are committed to nurturing our community of artists and inspiring the makers of tomorrow.
