Due to his numerous self-portraits, painter Koos de Vries is very visible in his own body of work. His distinctive thin mustache and shoulder-length hair are easily recognizable in the diptych 'I constantly complain about the pain I’m in'. We first see him depicted in a bath, experiencing unreasonable shame during a hangover, a feeling he describes as wanting to hit himself in the head. This moment is captured in the second painting, where the painter raises a club above the third self-portrait in the diptych. De Vries sees this as "A way to deal with emotions such as shame." In addition to oil paint, De Vries also utilizes the airbrush, affording him the means to cultivate his distinctive artistic approach, and drawing inspiration from 17th-century painters who, despite limited anatomical knowledge, managed to create credible figures.
