Katrein Breukers
Katrein Breukers’s practice consists mostly of combining techniques and research of different materials, including ceramics, textile and daily objects. Some of her ornaments seem to take shape merely by chance. In her recent work she turned to elevating ‘crafts and decoration’, which historically have been associated with femininity and amateur hobbyists, to the status of fine art. These ‘camp’ ceramic roses are organically shaped around her sculptures. Breukers likes to think that one can read the thorny twigs like floriography. This ‘language of the flowers’ dates back to Victorian times, when it allowed people to express feelings that people otherwise felt they could not express.
