Marloes Roeper is intrigued by what an individual sees when looking at a painting. While observing her everyday surroundings, she is struck by objects, forms and compositions that increase her desire to paint. This desire is not triggered by the beauty of these finds, but rather the fascination with the possibility of evoking meaning with a few brushstrokes.

Her paintings and drawings are almost always based on a photographic image that serves as a mnemonic. While sketching, she omits many details from the photographs and reduces the subject to its essence. From there the ultimate composition for the final painting process follows. Her method often results in a poetic image that has little to do with the original subject. The biggest challenge in her paintings is to achieve figuration with efficient means. Landscapes, tree branches and blades of grass form the motifs in her research into the dissection of reality.
