Buhlebezwe Siwani
Buhlebezwe Siwani is a South African multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses performance, photography, sculpture, and installation. Drawing from her experiences as a sangoma—a traditional healer—she delves into themes of African spirituality, womanhood, and the intersection of Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Her art interrogates the patriarchal framing of the Black female body and experience within the South African context. Through ritualistic performances and symbolic installations, Siwani creates spaces that challenge colonial narratives and offer avenues for healing and introspection.

Siwani completed her BAFA (Hons) at the Wits School of Arts in Johannesburg in 2011 and her MFA at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts in Cape Town in 2015. She has exhibited widely, including at the Michaelis Galleries in Cape Town, a site-specific exhibition in collaboration with APEX Art in New York City, and at Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town. Her work has been featured in international venues such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the 14th Curitiba Biennial in Brazil, and the Bamako Encounters in Mali. Siwani has participated in residencies at institutions like Het Vijfde Seizoen in Amersfoort and the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She currently lives and works between Amsterdam and Cape Town.
