Diana Gheorghiu’s body of work comprises computer-generated characters framed within static images, videos, and installations. They are usually taking care of themselves in a detached manner, their bodies contorting, being deformed, and performing themselves. Their dissociated selves illustrate a form of personhood that has subsumed the body to a regime of control in the face of an uncertain world. The artist uses these characters to explore the topics of self-care, new food, and the wellness industry.
Her works offer a critique of the wellness industry and the pressure it exerts on individuals to choose and safeguard our health. Gheorghiu believes that focusing on our self-satisfaction can provoke a sense of guilt and anxiety, where bonds between people are broken down and any sense of solidarity is crushed.
