Dewy Elsinga (BUTTERFINGAZ)
Dewy Elsinga, often working under the name “BUTTERFINGAZ”, works contains colorful, big murals, paintings, collages, prints and zines, both commissioned and autonomous. Seemingly abstract works are inspired by city life situations - picturing (disappearing) landmarks, stores and street views, amongst others - often referring back to cultural diversity and gentrification.
Curiosity plays a big role in both the making process and the end results. Learning the skill of painting during her internship with an autonomous painter back in 2017, Elsinga has developed her painting style through interest in op-art, (funk) music culture and experimenting with brushes. This resulted in a colorful style that resides between abstract and figurative, inviting the viewer to confront the world around them with the same curiosity that led to making the painting. Alongside these city paintings, the artist has also started a series of paintings and prints about times spent in natural surroundings inspired by her climbing trips.
