Verena Blok’s practice is rooted in a deep fascination with personal histories and the art of narrative storytelling. Driven by an interest in how cultural and political tides shape individual lives, she utilizes photography to illuminate the inner worlds of those with whom she builds intimate, long-term connections. At the core of her work is the encounter; using an unobtrusive analog 35mm camera, Blok embeds herself within specific social contexts to create shared worlds, inhabited by both the artist and her subjects. Her visual language oscillates between evocative portraits, still lifes, and tactile close-ups, weaving the subtle nuances of human emotion into a cohesive thematic thread.

As a dual citizen of the Netherlands and Poland, Blok navigates a unique position between East and West, a perspective informed by her upbringing in Poland and the United States amidst shifting global ideologies. Within dreamy, often cinematic settings, she deliberately explores the discomfort found within contested societal themes, including the performance of gender and hypermasculinity, nationalism, and reproductive rights.
