Drawing on makeshift structures and disposable materials that arrive stalled, misaligned, or devastated from sites of production, Michelle Chang Qin registers labor as a condition of perpetual dislocation and recalibration. Echoing the unfinished thoughts and wandering avatars of a person engaged in monotonous tasks.

In Qin’s sculptures and installations, vernacular materials and tacit technologies inherited through familial practice and informal economies are interwoven with industrial-grade cement, steel, rubber and fiberglass. Through the leakages and failures of these difficult mixtures, her work articulates an illicit knowledge of what happens to the working body within architectures of governance and commerce that both conceal and depend upon its movement.
