Sander Coers
Sander Coers’ work balances the borders of documentary and fiction. With a tender gaze, he seeks to establish new perspectives on masculinity by visualizing, recontextualizing, and (de)constructing memories. The coming-of-age theme is recurring throughout his work, as he reflects on stories of love, friendship, and self-discovery drawn from his family, friends, and peers.
Fascinated by the idea of telling stories from generation to generation through vacation photos, the artist explores the romanticized notions of the past encapsulated in these images. His visual style emulates these photos through deeply saturated colors and nostalgic scenes, infusing his portraits, stills, and landscapes with profound emotions. His work reflects on how these photos, typically portraying only happy moments, contribute to shaping familial narratives and perceptions of history.
